How points are calculated

Every player receives ranking points at the end of the event. The calculator below covers all 3 formats: Americano / Mexicano (partner rotation), Team (fixed pairs, round robin) and King of the Court (multi-court with promotion/relegation).

Formula: max(5, round(16 × (1 − (rank − 1) / 16) × 5 × 1.5))

The formula

ranking_points(rank, N, level_mult) =
  max(5, round(N × (1 − (rank − 1) / N) × 5 × level_mult))

where:
  rank = the player’s final position (1 = first place)
  N = the actual number of players present
  level_mult = level multiplier (see below)

Level multipliers

Each level has a multiplier that reflects how tough the competition is. For the same position, points earned at Advanced are worth double those at Beginners.

LevelMultiplierWho it’s for
Beginners×1.0Div 4 / Men's 5 players + new accounts
Intermediate×1.5Div 3 / Div 4 players
Advanced×2.0Div 1 / Div 2 players
Mixed levels×1.0Open — no level filter

Principles behind the formula

  • Linear by position: the gap between two consecutive places is constant, with no odd jumps. 2nd place is worth 100/N % less than 1st, 3rd place another 100/N % less, and so on.
  • Scales with the size of the field: winning against 32 people is worth 8 times as much as winning against 8. Different competition = different reward.
  • Level multiplier: the real difficulty of the competition is reflected in the points. 1st place at Advanced (×2.0) = 2× the same place at Beginners (×1.0).
  • 5-point floor: no player leaves with zero. Taking part is rewarded at a minimum — you come, you play, you get points.
  • Based on actual N: points are calculated on how many players turned up (e.g. 12), not on the maximum capacity (e.g. 20).

The 12-month window (decay)

As with the tournament ranking, points expire on the Monday of the same week the following year. This means the ranking reflects your form over the last year, not past achievements.

Your profile will show two views:

  • Last 12 months — the active ranking, what counts now
  • All-time — every point you’ve ever earned, for the record

For pair events (team format)

At fixed-pair events (round robin), the formula is the same but calibrated on the total number of players (= 2 × the number of pairs), not on the number of pairs:

ranking_points = max(5, round(
  (N_pairs × 2) × (1 − (rank − 1) / N_pairs) × 5 × level_mult
))

This keeps parity with solo events: a winner at an Advanced team event with 8 pairs (16 people) gets 160pts, exactly the same as a winner of an Advanced solo event with 16 people. Both players in the pair receive the same points.

For King of the Court

At KoTC the formula is completely different — it’s no longer based on the final position, but on the contribution of each individual match, weighted by the court it was played on:

For each round played:
  base = (N_courts − court_number + 1) × 2
  match_contribution = base (if you won)
                     = base × 0.5   (if you lost)

ranking_points = max(5, round(
  SUM(match_contributions) × level_mult × king_bonus
))

king_bonus = 1.15 if the pair wins the last match on Court 1
           = 1.0  otherwise

The fairness logic: winning on Court 1 (against the best) is worth more than winning on the last court. Someone who battled all evening on Court 1 doesn’t get the same points as someone who stayed on the last one. The matches differ in difficulty, and the points reflect that.

Select “King of the Court” in the calculator above to see the table of contributions per court and typical scenarios (The perfect king, Mid-pack, etc.) with the full calculation.
